Classic Arts News Heinz Wallberg, Conductor of Germany's Essen Philharmonic, Dies Heinz Wallberg, the conductor of Germany's Essen Philharmonic Orchestra, died Wednesday, September 29, the Associated Press reports. He was 81.
During his 50-year career, Wallberg held tenures as music director in Augsburg, Bremen, Wiesbaden, Essen, Munich, and Vienna.

He performed more than 450 times at the Vienna State Opera, and his concerts have been featured in more than 100 recordings.

Wallberg was also a recipient of both Germany's Great Cross of Merit and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Art and Sciences.
