News HERE Announces 2008 Culturemart Productions HERE Arts Center's 10th annual festival of new works, Culturemart, will return Jan. 4-21, 2008.

The hybrid festival incorporates the disciplines of dance, theatre, music, new media, puppetry and visual art with modern technology to present challenging new performance art works.

Through its residency programs, HARP & Dream Music, HERE commissions and develops the new works presented as part of Culturemart, which serves as the culmination of the year-long residency programs. In many cases, the works presented during Culturemart are picked up for HERE's main-stage season.

The 11 productions slated for Culturemart 2008 include:

Taylor Mac's The Lily's Revenge (Jan. 4-5)
"Through puppets, elaborate costume designs, live music, and vaudevillian theatrics Taylor Mac reveals our national pastime of melancholy remembrances."

Ego by David Michael Friend (Jan. 4-5)
"Enter a puppeteers's mind as he develops his newest masterpiece." Miranda 5X by Kamala Sankaram (Jan. 8-9)
"Three murder suspects, each experience the last hour of Miranda's life -- you guess whodunit!"

WATER (or the secret life of objects)
Presented by Shelia Callaghan, William Cusick and Danielle Topol (Jan. 8-9)
"Experience this fragmented, epic journey to the 'source' – part installation, part narrative."

The Gospel According to Jack Vitrolo
Presented by The South Wing (Jan. 10-12)
"The South Wing theatre company brings its trademark neo-expressionist style to this scathing critique of modern medicine."

MOSHEH a VideOpera by Yoav Gal (Jan. 12-13)
"'Indie Opera' composer Yoav Gal depicts Moses' early years, re-imagined in contemporary, 'grungy' Brooklyn, as well as in his homeland of Israel."

Paris Syndrome from the ensemble Ex.Pgirl (Jan. 14-15)
"Humorous video interviews, playful multi-lingual text, and hilarious physicality merge as Ex.Pgirl tackles this phenomenon of extreme culture shock."

837 Venice Boulevard by Faye Driscoll (Jan. 14-15)
"Choreographer Faye Driscoll examines the relationship between time, identity and memory, structuring childhood memories as a mystery story in her investigation of the universal need to 'make sense' of the past."

Foodstable from Richard Toth (Jan. 16-17)
"A dialogue between contemporary performers and H.G. Lewis' 1963 cult classic, Blood Feast."

Alexandra Beller's What Comes After Happy (Jan. 16-17)
"Alexandra Beller challenges the American obsession with happiness, deconstructing self-help manuals, spiritual guidance, and children's television."

The festival concludes with Christina Campanella and Stephanie Fleischmann's Red Fly/Blue Bottle, (Jan. 19-21), which is described as "a lyrical meditation on absence, the undertow of war, and the transformative properties of objects."

Previous Culturemart presentations to graduate to HERE's main-stage season include Corey Dargel's Removable Parts, Theater of a Two-Headed Calf's Drum of the Waves of Horikawa, and Taylor Mac's critically acclaimed The Young Ladies Of.
