News Hir, with Kristine Nielsen and Transgender Teen Actor Tom Phelan, Begins Tonight The Playwrights Horizons production of Taylor Mac's Hir begins previews Oct. 16. The new Off-Broadway play is billed as a "subversive comedy" with a cast led by Tony nominee and two-time Obie winner Kristine Nielsen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), joined by transgender teen actor Tom Phelan from the groundbreaking TV series "The Fosters."

Helmed by Niegel Smith, Hir follows the story of a wife and mother (played by Nielsen) who finds herself liberated from an oppressive marriage and "on a crusade to dismantle the patriarchy," state press notes. Phelan plays her son, who is "newly out transgender," and her ally.

The cast also features Daniel Oreskes (Billy Elliott) and Cameron Scoggins (Pocatello). Performances will run through Nov. 29, with an official opening night scheduled for Nov. 8.

The production features scenic design by three-time Tony Award nominee David Zinn, costume design by Obie Award winner Gabriel Berry, lighting design by Mike Inwood and sound design by Fitz Patton.
