As reported last fall, the season will mark conductor John Mauceri's final year as director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He will have a continued relationship with the ensemble, which he revived in 1991, as founding director.
The Philharmonic's performance of Tosca, led by Mauceri, will feature Patricia Racette, Frank Porretta, and James Morris. Other special events include staged performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, a Tchaikovsky program accompanied by fireworks, and a season-ending salute to Mauceri with members of the Joffrey Ballet and guest stars from the worlds of film, Broadway, and classical music.
Slatkin will lead three weeks of concerts, including Beethoven's Eighth and Ninth Symphonies, Dvoršk's "New World" Symphony, and a celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth featuring scenes from Peter Shaffer's play Amadeus.
Guest conductors include Andrew Davis, Bramwell Tovey, Hugh Wolff, Edo de Waart, and Nicholas McGegan; soloists include violinist James Ehnes, pianist Shai Wosner, violinist Nikolaj Znaider, pianist Stephen Hough, cellist Han-Na Chang, and guitarists S_rgio and Odair Assad.
The Bowl's jazz series, directed by bassist Christian McBride, will include performances by trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, guitarist John Pizzarelli (with vocalists Kurt Elling, Bill Henderson, Annie Ross, and Tierney Sutton), and saxophonist Joshua Redman.
