Frank's Viola Concerto, commissioned by the Houston Symphony, will get its world premiere on February 23, with principal violist Wayne Brooks as soloist. Other contemporary American music on the program includes works by John Adams (the Pulitzer Prize-winning On the Transmigration of Souls), Steven Stucky, and Michael Gandolfi.
The season will open on September 9 with a performance led by music director Hans Graf and featuring violinist Gil Shaham. Other highlights include a program in April 2007 featuring Itzhak Perlman as conductor and violinist, and one in May with pianist Lang Lang.
Other visiting soloists include cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Yefim Bronfman, and violinists Sarah Chang, Joshua Bell, and Hilary Hahn. Among the guest conductors on the program are the Atlanta Symphony's Robert Spano, the Colorado Symphony's Jeffrey Kahane, and the Toronto Symphony's Peter Oundjian.
