The cast — including Jaclyn Huberman, John Jellison, Cass Morgan, Ben Roseberry and Dan Sharkey — will record a demo of the new musical under the supervision of Sh-K-Boom Records founder Kurt Deutsch. Mary-Mitchell Campbell is the musical director. Steve Stettler, producing director of Weston, told Playbill.com, "The creators each receive 50 copies of the demo to send to potential producers and developers of new musical work. We found that this was a huge need for emerging composing teams who normally only have recordings made in their apartment with the writers singing all the parts."

Dogs of Pripyat, which was penned by Aron Accurso (music) and Jill Abramovitz (lyrics), was the winner of the Weston Playhouse's third annual New Musical Award. Based on a play by Leah Napolin, the musical, according to press notes, "parallels the lives of the pets who were left behind and two old peasants who chose to stay in their home after the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl."

Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty nominated Dogs for the New Musical Award, which "supports emerging composing teams of unique promise."
