I Sing!, the Off-Broadway musical about young people living, loving and yearning in New York City wraps up its run Aug. 12 at the Maverick Theatre.

The new musical written by writers unknown in New York began previews June 1 and opened June 14. The original print ads for the show offered smiling faces of its squeaky-clean cast. In recent weeks, in a marketing switch, the ads showed the image of a male character in briefs being dominated by a woman tugging at a leash around his neck.

Benjamin Salka directs the new work he co-wrote with composer Eli Bolin and lyricist Sam Forman. The libretto is by Bolin, Forman and Salka. By its close, I Sing! will have played a total of 70 performances and 13 preview performances.

The show is billed as exploring "the wild discoveries and inevitable losses of being young, vibrant and alive today in New York City." The tuner follows five Gen Y kids in their 20s and is somewhat inspired by the lives of the twentysomething creative team (including the producers and two actors in the troupe), who attended Northwestern University together.

Fresh out of college, the characters "mix and mingle, forming relationships as intimate, intricate, ambivalent and devastating as anything you will ever find in the Big Apple," according to press notes. The cast includes newcomers Billy Eichner, Jeff Juday, Jodie Langel, Michael Raine and Meredith Zeitlin.

Arik Ahitov, Jeff Beil and Samuel Franco produce. Vadim Feichtner is musical director. Designers are Eric L. Renschler (set), Steven Epstein (costumes) and Ben Stanton (lighting).

Tickets are $40. The 140-seat Maverick Theatre is at 307 W. 26th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues. For ticket information, call (212) 239-6200.
