News Ibsen in the Park: Norwegian Peer Gynt Visits Delacorte Oct. 5-7
Taking a break from the usual Shakespeare (and occasional Brecht or Chekhov), Central Park's Delacorte Theater will host a production of Peer Gynt by Norwegian master Henrik Ibsen this fall.

The staging, by director Svein Sturla Hungnes (who also plays the title role), will play for three performances only, Oct. 5-7. The cast will feature more than 150 actors and Edvard Grieg's well-known score inspired by the play will be performed by the American Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Timothy Myers. This particular version of Peer Gynt has been staged outdoors in Norway near every year as part of the Peer Gynt Festival, drawing sold out crowds of more than 15,000 each season. The festival began in 1928 to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Henrik Ibsen. Since 1967, the festival has been held every year at the beginning of August. The New York visit coincides with the 100th anniversary of Ibsen's death.

The show will be performed in English and will feature the Peer Gynt Chamber Choir led by Nina Moen. In the cast are Kari Simonsen, Linda Øvrebø, Mari Maurstad, Stein Grønli, Rune Reksten, Karoline Kruger, and Camilla Granlien.

Svein Sturla Hungnes has been the director of Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå since 1989 and has played the role of Peer Gynt in the same production since 1995.
