News "Into the Woods" Dominates at the Box Office Becoming the Biggest Launch of a Broadway Adaptation The film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods opened Christmas Day and has remained strong through its first weekend bringing in $46.1 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the four-day weekend, "Into the Woods" falls behind "The Hobbit," which grossed $54.5 million and Angelina Jolie's WWII drama "Unbroken," which brought in $47.3 million. The Rob Marshall directed film has become the biggest launch of a Broadway adaptation since "Mamma Mia!" ($27.8 million).

Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis stated of the film's success, "We appealed to everyone. Fifty-one percent of our business came from adults, 38 percent from families and 11 percent from teens. It's very encouraging to see that kind of balance."

In its first weekend, "Into the Woods" has been seen by four times the amount of people than those who saw both Broadway runs combined.

Overall, the holiday weekend box office revenue was up eight percent from last year.
