News "Into the Woods" Slides Into Second Place in Domestic Box-Office Totals, Beating "Unbroken" The film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods, which opened Christmas Day, ranked second place at the domestic box office, sliding in just above Universal's "Unbroken."

According to Rentrak, the Disney film took in $31,051,923 from 2,440 locations (averaging $12,726) at the domestic box office (U.S. and Canada) from Dec. 26-28. It earned a cumulative revenue of $46,141,663. "Unbroken" took in $30,621,445 from 3,131 locations (averaging $9,780) during that time. Its cumulative revenue was $46,055,845.

The Warner Bros. film "The Hobbit" was the top earner at the box office, taking in $40,920,000 from 3,875 locations (averaging $10,560); its cume revenue was $168,021,968. 

As previously reported, the Rob Marshall-directed film has become the biggest launch of a Broadway adaptation since "Mamma Mia!" ($27.8 million). 

The soundtrack for the film is currently ranked No. 7 on the iTunes Top Albums chart with the deluxe edition at No. 13. The soundtrack for "Annie" is ranked at No. 10.

Read reviews of the film here. Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis stated of the film's success, "We appealed to everyone. Fifty-one percent of our business came from adults, 38 percent from families and 11 percent from teens. It's very encouraging to see that kind of balance."

In its first weekend, "Into the Woods" was seen by four times the amount of people than those who saw both Broadway runs combined.

Overall, the holiday weekend box-office revenue was up eight percent from last year.
