Two fellow thespians with New York theatre roots are currently shooting a new film in New York. The movie, titled Cherry Pink, stars Patti LuPone, recently on Broadway in David Mamet's The Old Neighborhood. Behind the camera is "Seinfeld" alum Jason Alexander, whose theatre credits include Jerome Robbins' Broadway and Merrily We Roll Along. The film, which began shooting last week, is the coming-of-age story of an adolescent played by Ryan Merriman. LuPone plays his mother. Also in the cast is Gretchen Moll. Jean Doumanian is producing and the screenplay is by Marshall Karp. Shooting is expected to conclude July 31, according a spokesman at William Morris, which reps Alexander. No release date has been set for the film.
Alexander is currently developing a musical version of the film Marty which is intended for Broadway. Details about the project are still scarce. LuPone, meanwhile, was approached by the Paper Mill Playhouse about starring in a fall production of Gypsy but was already committed to another project.
