The performances kicks off a three-week Dizzy Gillespie Festival, featuring the music of the trumpeter, bandleader, and bebop pioneer for whom the club is named.
Charlap and his regular sidemen, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, are joined by trumpeter Nicholas Payton and alto saxophonist Charles McPherson through Sunday, October 24.
The festival continues October 26-31, when alto saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera and his group perform Gillespie's Latin-tinged music. Saxophonist Victor Goines leads the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, with trumpeter Tom Harrell and vocalist Carla Cook, in Gillespie's big band music from November 2-7.
Dizzy's Club, a curvaceous wood-paneled room overlooking Central Park, will function as a full-fledged nightclub, with a bar, a soul-food menu, and two sets nightly from Tuesday through Sunday, plus late-night jam sessions from Tuesday through Saturday. On Monday nights, the club will showcase students from the Juilliard jazz program and other local music schools.
