Jeremy Jordan may be slightly preoccupied with television right now—since his Supergirl was picked up for a second season by the CW; but that doesn’t mean the Tony nominee has abandoned his musical side.
In addition to the recently announced filming of Disney’s Newsies (details still to be announced), Jordan says he is working on his first solo album. “There’s a lot of down time between filming, and that doesn’t allow for any sort of theatre stuff or shooting any other films, but I’ve been writing my own music for a while now,” says Jordan.
The actor is still finding his footing when it comes to his style and genre. “There’s definitely a singer-songwriter quality to it, there’s a little bit of an Adele kind of Brit pop sound to it but also some Jason Mraz, some Gavin DeGraw,” says Jordan. “It’s still finding exactly what it is, and I think the album is going to be a good mix of different things. I like to use my voice in different ways, and I’m really excited to kind of depart from the soundtrack, theatre thing that I’ve recorded in the past. I’ve done a lot of recordings, but it’s all been for shows or movies, so it’ll be fun to depart from that world.” Jordan has also co-written the music to three songs, with writers yet to be named.
Despite Jordan’s foray into the recording realm, you can take the kid out of the theatre, but you can’t take the theatre out of the kid. “It’s all my own lyrics,” says Jordan. “I’m the kind of person that when you listen to songs on the radio, I’m much more interested in what they have to say than just making a cool beat that you can dance to. That’s not my style. I’m much more interested in storytelling, which is probably the theatre nerd in me.”
As of now, there is no timetable for the album; it’s a project at which Jordan slowly chips away. And he is a bit of a Renaissance man. “I also want to experiment with other elements,” he says. “I’ve thought about doing a novel one of these days. I don’t want to be stuck with one specific thing. That’s kind of why I got into this business in the first place.”
