Jesus Hopped the "A" Train, a hit in two separate Off-Broadway incarnations last year, and due at London's Donmar Warehouse in 2003, will have its Chicago debut Feb. 28-March 31 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company's Garage space.
Ron OJ Parson directs a cast featuring Eric Aviles, Stephanie Childers, Ricardo Gutierrez, Keith Kupferer and E. Milton Wheeler.
Aviles stars as Angel, a young hispanic man jailed for killing a cult leader who had recruited Angel's best friend. In prison, Angel finds his justifications for the killing mirrors by those of fellow inmate, Lucius, a born-again serial killer. Both find a sympathetic ear in soft-harded guard D'Amico, but a nemesis in brutal guard Valdez. Childers plays Angel's conflicted advocate.
John Ortiz starred as Angel in the Off-Broadway productions. Both he and Guirgis are members of the LAByrinth Theatre Company.
