Jimmy Stewart, a Hollywood icon who started on the stage and made occasional returns to Broadway throughout his six-decade acting career, has died at 89.
The star of It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Philadelphia Story in the movies, died of a blood clot in his lung, according to AP.
Stewart rose to stardom on Broadway in dramas including Yellow Jack and Divided by Three in the mid 1930s.
Stewart created most famous stage role in Mary Chase's comedy, Harvey (1947), playing the very-possibly-sane Elwood P. Dowd who is the only person who can see the title character -- a friendly, six-foot tall, invisible rabbit. Stewart repeated the role in a 1970 Broadway revival that starred Helen Hayes.
