Classic Arts News JoAnn Falletta Tries Out for Music Director Position in Phoenix JoAnn Falletta, the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Virginia Symphony, leads the Phoenix Orchestra in three concerts later this week.
According to the Arizona Republic, Falletta is one of seven candidates for the Phoenix Symphony's vacant music director job. Hermann Michael stepped down at the end of 2003-04 after seven years.

Falletta will lead a program of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, with pianist Horacio Gutierrez, on October 21, 22, and 23.

A one-time prot_g_ of Leonard Bernstein, Falletta is considered one of the leading conductors of her generation, and is credited with turning around the Buffalo Philharmonic.
