PlayBlog John Simon at 85: A Birthday Boy Gets a Seldes Salute During all the award-giving going on at The New York Drama Critics Circle ceremony May 10, Marian Seldes, daughter of a theatre critic (the late Gilbert Seldes, who penned the book "The Seven Lively Arts"), stepped forward to make a toast to one of the longstanding members of the august group.

"I would hate to think of the theatre world without critics," said Marian Seldes, a Tony-winning actress due an honorary Tony in June. "Without them, we'd not have the record of each season. You can read who you like and love who you like and be afraid of who you like, but I am here to propose a toast to a man I respect because he knows so much. Encyclopedic is the word I'm saying for John Simon's knowledge of the theatre and actors. Read him. Read him. And you'll know what I'm saying."

In briefer, less eloquent words: Happy Birthday. Simon turns 85 on May 12.
