John Simon, the longtime theatre critic for New York magazine, is on leave from his post as he recovers from a recent hip operation. Jeremy Gerard, features editor at the weekly, will assume the theatre beat while Simon recovers.

Simon, who underwent hip replacement surgery, is expected to be out for anywhere from six weeks to three months. The writer, known for his erudition and acerbic, often brutal writing style, began working at New York in 1969, soon after the publication's creation. He is the author of several collections of criticism, including "Uneasy Stages" and "Singularities."

Before coming to New York, Gerard was a theatre critic and editor at Variety, where he penned the weekly theatre column. Before that, he wrote at the New York Times.
