The play, which won the Pinter Review Prize and the American Theatre Critics’ Association Osborne Award and was also named Best Play of the Year by the Miami Herald and the Miami New Times, revolves around three people who are drawn irresistibly back to Rome to uncover the truth behind a young man's disappearance. To his mother he was an idealist who fled the West for Africa. His mother's lover remembers an angry misfit who threw his life away. But his sister thinks she knows why he really went missing, and a story of desire, loneliness and betrayal unfolds.
The three protagonists will be played by Sorcha Cusack, Barry Stanton and Miranda Foster, respectively. The play is directed by Tom Littler, with designs by Morgan Large, lighting by Will Reynolds and sound by Jamie Beamish. It is being presented by Theatre 503 and Primavera in association with Le Nez Productions Ltd.
Cusack's acclaimed credits include The Five Wives of Maurice Pinder (National Theatre), The Grapes of Wrath (Chichester/ETT), Sunday Bloody Sunday (Tricycle), as well as Romeo and Juliet and King John (RSC), as well as three years in the BBC series "Casualty" as Kate Wilson.
Stanton spent ten years with the RSC, with roles including Shamreyev in The Cherry Orchard and Toby Belch in Twelfth Night; and several seasons in Bath with Sir Peter Hall. He has appeared in five of Peter Brook's productions and was a founding member of the original 1968 Paris Experimental Theatre.
Foster's recent credits include Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare's Globe and Helene in Rufus Norris's Festen. Her work for the National Theatre includes Cordelia in King Lear, Marya in The Government Inspector and Charmian in Antony and Cleopatra. Littler is artistic director of Primavera, and recently directed Sondheim and Laurents' Anyone Can Whistle (Jermyn Street Theatre), Origin of the Species (Arcola), Saturday Night (Jermyn Street, transferred to Arts Theatre), Jingo: A Farce of War (Finborough) and the Forgotten Classics series for the company.
J T Rogers’ plays include The Overwhelming (seen at the National Theatre in 2006 and subsequently at Roundabout's Laura Pels Theater at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center in New York in 2007), and one of the plays in The Great Game project of plays about Afghanistan for the Tricycle.
