Julia Murney, seen on Broadway in Wicked and Off-Broadway in The Wild Party, will play the ultimate stage mother Rose in the Cape Playhouse's summer production of Gypsy. Performances of the Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, and Stephen Sondheim musical are scheduled at the Massachusetts venue for August 8–19.

Murney will be joined by a fellow Elphaba, Caroline Bowman (Kinky Boots, Evita on tour), as Louise, James Lloyd Reynolds (The Blacklist, Odd Mom Out, Law and Order) as Herbie, Jane Blass (Gypsy, Hairspray) as Mazeppa, Tess Soltau (Wicked, Addams Family) as June, Jennifer Cody (Shrek the Musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) as Tessie/Cratchit, Amy Bodnar (Oklahoma!) as Electra, and Garett Hawe (Newsies; Mary Poppins, Matilda) as Tulsa. Cape Playhouse Artistic Director Michael Rader directs; Jason Sparks choreographs.

The 2017 season kicks off with Yasmina Reza's Art, running June 12–24. Directed by Matt Lenz, the Tony-winning comedy about the meaning of art and friendship will star David Beach (Something Rotten, It's Only A Play) as Marc, Eddie Korbich (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, A Christmas Story) as Yvan, and David Andrew Macdonald (Skylight; Rocky) as Serge.

Larry Shue's The Foreigner, which demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English, will follow, running June 27–July 8. The cast will feature Allison Layman (The Path) as Catherine, John Scherer (Sunset Boulevard) as Charlie, John Skelley (Guthrie Theatre, Kennedy Center) as David, and Sally Mayes (She Loves Me, Steel Magnolias) as Betty under the direction of Hunter Foster (The Bridges of Madison County, Million Dollar Quartet, Urinetown).

Marcia Milgrom Dodge will direct and choreograph the Tony-nominated musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which will be seen at the Playhouse July 11–22. Featuring music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, the company will include Kyle Scatliffe (The Color Purple, Les Misérables) as Mitch, Kay Trinidad (The Little Mermaid) as Marcy Parks, Farah Alvin (It Shoulda Been You, Nine, The Look of Love) as Rona, and Tony Award winner Michael McGrath (She Loves Me, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Spamalot) as Panch.

John Logan's Tony-winning drama Red, about famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko, will be seen July 25–August 5 under the direction of David Glenn Armstrong. Patrick Stafford, who received a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his role as Ken in Red, will reprise his performance for Playhouse audiences opposite Stephen Caffrey (Tour of Duty, All My Children) as Rothko.

The season will conclude August 22–September 2 with Murder for Two, in which two actors play 13 roles (not to mention the piano) in a winking homage to old-fashioned murder mysteries. Ian Lowe will play Marcus, and Jeremiah Ginn (Anything Goes) will portray The Suspects, reprising the roles they played in the musical's national tour. Directed by J. Scott Lapp, Murder for Two has a book and music by Joe Kinosian and book and lyrics by Kellen Blair.
