St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre will stage the world-premiere productions of Kara Lee Corthron's Julius by Design and the musical play I Wish You Love, plus a co-production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom with the Guthrie Theatre in the 2010-2011 season.

Under the artistic direction of founder Lou Bellamy, the Penumbra season will launch with the regional premiere of Adam P. Kennedy and Adrienne Kennedy's Sleep Deprivation Chamber Sept. 16-Oct. 10.

Robbie McCauley will direct the production that centers on a college student who is brutally beaten by police and the mother who launches a campaign to protect her son from the officer that claims the boy struck first.

Bellamy and T. Mychael Rambo will present their gospel telling of Black Nativity: Now's the Time, running Nov. 26-Dec. 26 under the direction of Dominic Taylor.

Corthron's Julius by Design, under Bellamy's direction, will run Jan. 20-Feb. 13, 2011. In the play, two parents are coping with the murder of their teenage son by focusing on their daily life. But one parent has been secretly writing letters to the killer.

The Nat King Cole play-with-music, I Wish You Love, will receive its world premiere April 21-May 22, 2011. Dominic Taylor penned the biographical work that offers a portrait of the late singer. Bellamy will direct the production that will later play the Kennedy Center in June 2011. Bellamy will also helm August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which will run Feb. 11-March 6-2011, at the Guthrie Theater.
