News Karen Finley to Wake Up! Off-Broadway in October Wake Up! is the title of the latest offering from controversial performance artist Karen Finley.

The work, which features The Dreams of Laura Bush and The Passion of Terri Schiavo, will begin previews at the Lafayette Street Theater at the Theaters at 45 Bleecker Oct. 7. Opening night is scheduled for Oct. 21.

The Dreams of Laura Bush is described as "an illustrated dream journal of America's First Lady. Mrs. Bush's dreams alternate between the profound and the mundane and feature a cast of international celebs and politicians. Drawings (also by Finley) are projected as a backdrop as the dreams unfold. Ultimately, the politics of the feminine passive power are uncovered with a blend humor and unleashed desire in this surreal piece."

Press notes describe The Passion of Terri Schiavo as such: "A live action ink painting becomes the abstracted soul projection of a culture obsessed with one woman's right to die yet at the same time at war. In this work, an oppositional narrative gives voice to both pro and con, family, stranger and society at large. It is an impassioned, personal look at issues of dignity in death and the value of life."

Karen Finley is the recipient of two Obie Awards and two Bessies. Her solo pieces include George and Martha, Make Love, The American Chestnut, A Certain Level of Denial and The Return of The Chocolate Smeared Woman. In 1990 she sued the NEA for withdrawing grants on the grounds of indecency.

Wake Up! will play Sundays at 7 PM through Nov. 18. The Lafayette Street Theater is located at 45 Bleecker at the corner of Lafayette. For reservations call (212) 239-6200 or visit www.telecharge.com.
