News Karen Mason Is Dorothy Parker in New Musical, Sept. 22-Oct. 2
Karen Mason, most recently on Broadway in the long-running hit Mamma Mia!, will play the late playwright and poet Dorothy Parker in a new musical that will be presented this fall during the New York Music Theatre Festival.

Entitled You Might As Well Live, the musical will play the 45th Street Theatre Sept. 22-Oct. 2. Live features book and music by Norman Matthews with lyrics by Parker. The creative team also includes Christopher Denny (musical director), Denis Jones (choreographer), John Scheffer (set and costume designer). Guy Stroman directs.

In You Might As Well Live, press notes explain, "Dorothy Parker is at her wit's end. She's past deadline for a collection of her work. She can't get her typewriter to listen to reason. Her ex-husband (twice-over) wants her in Hollywood to write a screenplay for Marilyn Monroe, and she can't pay her rent. Can she cope?"

Born in New Jersey in 1893, Dorothy Parker's Broadway credits include the plays Close Harmony, After Such Pleasures and The Ladies of the Corridor. She also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical revue Shoot the Works and contributed lyrics to Candide. She was nominated for two Academy Awards: in 1938 for the screenplay of "A Star Is Born" and in 1948 for "Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman." Parker died June 7, 1967, having become one of the most successful women writers of her era.

A star of the musical theatre and cabaret stage, Karen Mason has appeared on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, Sunset Boulevard, Jerome Robbins' Broadway and Torch Song Trilogy. Her Off-Broadway credits include And the World Goes 'Round and Carnival, and she has also been seen on the small screen in "Law & Order" and "As the World Turns." A six-time MAC Award-winning performer, Mason has charmed audiences at Carnegie Hall, Rainbow & Stars, Davenport's and L.A.'s The Cinegrill. Her solo recordings include "When the Sun Comes Out," "Better Days," "Not So Simply Broadway" and "Christmas! Christmas! Christmas!"
