News Kate Reinders Injured in Chicago Wicked Kate Reinders, who plays Glinda in the sit-down production of Wicked at Chicago's Ford Center for the Performing Arts' Oriental Theatre, was injured during a recent performance of the hit Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical.

A spokesperson for the musical confirmed that Reinders broke a small bone in her foot during the song "Popular." Although Reinders will be out of the show for a few weeks, it is not expected to be a prolonged period.

While she is recovering from her injury, Glinda understudy Sarah Jane Everman will play the role of the curly-locked witch.

Reinders recently received a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best Actress in a Principal Role—Musical for her performance in Wicked. She was on Broadway last season in the Beach Boys musical Good Vibrations and has also been seen on Broadway in Gypsy, Into the Woods and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Reinders' other theatrical credits include The Sound of Music, A Year with Frog and Toad and Nerds.

Reinders is the latest Wicked actress to suffer an onstage mishap. Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the role of Glinda, suffered a neck injury during the show's out-of-town tryout in San Francisco and wore a neck brace during part of her Broadway run. Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, who created the role of Elphaba, broke a rib during her final weekend of performances on Broadway. And, Stephanie J. Block, who plays Elphaba in the musical's national tour, suffered a back and neck injury during the tour's rehearsal period that caused her to miss several Toronto performances and the show's recent San Francisco engagement.

* The Chicago production of Wicked also stars Ana Gasteyer as Elphaba, Rondi Reed as Madame Morrible, Gene Weygandt as The Wizard, Kristoffer Cusick as Fiyero, Heidi Kettenring as Nessa Rose, Telly Leung as Boq and Steven Skybell as Dillamond. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, which turned every Oz myth inside out, Wicked explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. The two main characters meet at Shiz, a school where both hope to take up sorcery. Glinda is madly popular and Elphaba is, well, green. By a misunderstanding, they wind up roommates and, after an initial period of mutual loathing, begin to learn something about each other. Their life paths continue to intersect through a shared love, entry into the Emerald City and interaction with the Wizard himself. Eventually, their choices and convictions take them on widely different paths.

Wicked, with a score by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, began previews on Broadway Oct. 8, 2003, with an official opening Oct. 30, 2003. Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway company, repeated his duties for the Chicago production. The creative team also features Eugene Lee (set design), Susan Hilferty (costume design), Kenneth Posner (lighting design), Tony Meola (sound design) and Stephen Oremus (musical director).

Chicago's Ford Center for the Performing Arts/Oriental Theatre is located at 24 West Randolph Street. Tickets for Wicked are available at all Broadway in Chicago box offices (22 W. Monroe Street, 24 W. Randolph Street and 151 West Randolph Street) or by calling (312) 902-1400.
