Katharine Hepburn Memorabilia Will Be Auctioned in Dallas

The rare Hepburn gems being offered in the Dallas auctioneer’s 2011 December 13 Music & Entertainment Signature Auction are:

A Group of Self-Portraits, 1950s–1970s: In her private moments, one of Hepburn’s great pleasures was painting and sketching. This lot includes a watercolor and pen and ink work rendered on paper, depicting Hepburn as Much Ado About Nothing’s Beatrice, a character she played in a 1957 production at The American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, CT. Also included are two self-portrait sketches in pencil of the actress tending to her throat problems during her 1952 Broadway appearance in The Millionairess and curling her hair, with a note at the top that reads, “Every Day But Sunday / 4:30 to 7:30.” Lot 46020

An Original Drawing by Hirschfeld, 1960s: This unframed Hirchfeld rendering of Hepburn as Coco Chanel includes the famed artist’s hand-written suggestions for framing the piece. Lot 46019

A Bath Robe, 1960s: When one thinks “Hepburn,” one doesn’t usually think “pretty in pink.” But the actress was always full of surprises, as this offering of her pink textured terrycloth robe monogrammed “KHH” in hot pink lettering attests. Lot 46024

A Period Costume Coat, 1930s–1940s: This crimson velvet period coat features an elaborate four-tiered collar, 21-button front closure and red satin lining. There is no studio tag or label, but it is thought to have been constructed by costume designer Walter Plunkett, possibly for Hepburn’s role in the 1936 RKO film "Mary of Scotland." Lot 46023

A Photo Inscribed by Laurence Olivier, 1970s: In 1975 Hepburn and Laurence Olivier appeared for the first and only time together in the ABC Television movie, "Love Among the Ruins." Included in this lot is a color production photograph of the pair—a gift to Hepburn from Olivier—in a sterling Tiffany & Co frame and inscribed, “Darling Kate / Yours Larry.” Also in this lot is a movie edition of the book “Little Women,” printed to correspond with the 1933 RKO release of one of Hepburn’s greatest successes. A Set of Golf Clubs, Circa 1960s–1970s: Hepburn was an avid golfer in her youth and often played the nine-hole course situated directly behind her family home in Fenwick, CT. This partial set of the actress’ clubs is housed in a tan bag with leather trim and includes Louise Suggs irons numbered 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 as well as woods numbered 1, 3 and 5. Underneath the grip of each club is a label that reads: Katharine Hepburn / Fenwick Golf Club / Old Saybrook, Conn. Lot 46022
