Kathleen Turner to Direct and Star in The Killing of Sister George at Long Wharf

News   Kathleen Turner to Direct and Star in The Killing of Sister George at Long Wharf
Tony and Academy Award nominee Kathleen Turner will direct and star in a revised production of Frank Marcus' 1964 comedy The Killing of Sister George, which will play the Long Wharf Theatre this fall.

Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher (Tuesdays With Morrie, Never Gonna Dance) penned the new adaptation, which replaces the previously announced production of God of Carnage.

Marcus' estate gave its blessing for Hatcher's new take on the play. Turner (High, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) will direct the premiere that runs Nov. 28-Dec. 23.

Additional casting will be announced shortly.

"This is a very exciting step in my own development and in my own experience. Most actors of many years experience are quite used to directing themselves. It becomes a natural extension to me to carry it further, to direct others as well. In terms of the balance, having access to extraordinarily skillful and creative designers will take a great deal of the burden off me. I think I'm going to have the kind of support team that will make both jobs quite possible," Turner said in a statement. Here's how the play is billed: "By day June Buckridge (Turner) plays Sister George tending to the sick and poor on the radio hit 'Applehurst.' By night, she chews on cigars, swills gin and lets nothing and no one stand in her way, including her long suffering 'secretary' Childie. When 'Applehurst's ratings plummet, Sister George is shuffled meekly off to the Great Beyond. June refuses to go quietly from her starring perch, however, in this bawdy and witty comedy."

The Killing of Sister George premiered in London in 1964. The 1966 Broadway production featured Beryl Reid as Buckridge. She earned a Tony Award for her performance. Reid repeated her work in the 1968 film, which includes racy content that earned the work an X rating.
