Classic Arts News Kimmel Center Hosts Fifth Anniversary Celebration This Weekend Philadelphia's Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts celebrates the fifth anniversary of its opening this weekend; it will mark the event tomorrow with a day-long series of free events.
These include a solo piano recital in Perelman Theater by pianist Yuja Wang, a graduate of the neighboring Curtis Institute of Music and a 2006 Gilmore Young Artist Award recipient.

Other events feature the Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble; Warren Oree and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble; Animus (an instrumental group influenced by various musics including ancient Greek, blues and klezmer) and former Philadanco dancer Dawn Watson.

The Kimmel Center is home to eight major performing arts organizations: the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ballet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, American Theatre Arts for Youth, PHILADANCO, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and Peter Nero and the Philly Pops. The center hosts more than 750 performances per year, and has contributed over $321 million to the regional economy since its opening in 2001, according to a statement.

The anniversary events will begin at 1 p.m. and end at midnight in various Kimmel Center venues.
