As adapted by Avenue Q’s Tony-winning Jeff Whitty, inspired by (but not completely lifted from) the hit teen flick of 2000, the show, which is set to lift off at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, has two high school squads going head to head at the National Cheerleading Championships.

Kitt said that he and his High Fidelity lyricist, Amanda Green, will be supplying songs “for the for-want-of-a-better-word white cheerleaders, and Lin will be writing the songs for the ethnic, inner-city group of cheerleaders.”

Tipping this balance of power just a tad, the other Tony winners contributing to this new musical all come from the In the Heights camp: choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (who will direct) and orchestrator Alex Lacamoire.

The movie that put the awesomely unethnic Kirsten Dunst on the map presented her as a squad captain who learns their routines were stolen from a black school.
