The production will begin performances July 11 at Highgate's Upstairs at the Gatehouse Theatre prior to an official opening July 14, for a run through Aug. 16.
Klein's recent starring credits in the West End include playing The Old Lady in Candide for English National Opera at the London Coliseum, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof (Savoy Theatre), the Witch in Into the Woods for the Royal Opera House's Linsbury Studio, and Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance at the Gielgud Theatre. Other credits include the original cast of Les Miserables, seasons at the National Theatre in Candide, Sumerfolk, Romeo and Juliet, The Villains' Opera and Honk!, as well as playing Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd for Opera North.
Klein will be joined in the cast of Call Me Madam by Mark Henry-Evans (Wicked) as Kenneth Gibson and Kate Nelson (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as Princess Maria.
The production is directed by Thom Southerland, with choreography by Drew McOnie, musical direction by Alex Weatherhill, lighting design by Steve Miller and set and costume design by Alison Brookes.
In the show, Klein's Sally Adams, with slim credentials, is sent off to be ambassador for the tiny duchy of Lichtenburg. It's not long before her down-to-earth, typically undiplomatic manner has surprised and charmed the local gentry, especially the handsome Prime Minister. A second romance is blossoming between her Ivy League aid and Lichtenburg's enchanting young Princess. The course of love is threatened by the stuffy opposition, who eventually succeed in wrangling Sally's recall, but not before all has resolved happily for both pairs of lovers. Irving Berlin's score includes hits such as "It's a Lovely Day Today," "You're Just in Love" and "The Hostess with the Mostes' on the Ball." Southerland recently directed fringe productions of Rent (at Catford Broadway Theatre) and the U.K. premiere of Meredith Willson's The Unsinkable Molly Brown (at the Landor). Other productions include the European premiere of I Sing!, Divorce Me Darling!, Annie Get Your Gun, The Pajama Game and all-male productions of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore and The Mikado (all at the Union Theatre); and Bent, Oklahoma!, The Diary of Anne Frank and Mack and Mabel (all at Catford Broadway Theatre).
Choreographer Drew McOnie has worked with Stephen Mear on On the Town and regularly with Matthew Bourne.
