Krysta Rodriguez, George Salazar, and More Join Vassar's Powerhouse Season

Vassar & New York Stage and Film have announced the first wave of casting for the upcoming Powerhouse season, which will feature new works by Lynn Nottage, Duncan Sheik, Lisa Kron, Josh Radnor, Stephen Trask, and more. The 33rd season will run June 23 through July 30.

Casting has been announced for the first mainstage production: Radnor’s playwriting premiere Sacred Valley, directed by Sheryl Kaller (June 29–July 9). The cast will be made up of Michael Chernus (Orange Is The New Black), Abigail Spencer (Rectify), and David T. Patterson (The Path).

Powerhouse’s first musical workshop, Peter Lerman and Kron’s Stilyagi, has also found its cast. Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer will lead a cast made up of Krysta Rodriguez (Spring Awakening), Dave Thomas Brown (American Psycho), Lauren Patten (The Wolves), Dale Soules (Orange Is The New Black), Jeb Brown (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), George Salazar (The Lightning Thief), Alex Boniello (Spring Awakening), Joel Perez (Fun Home), Sarah Hunt, Marla Louissaint, Chelsea Turbin, Megan Masako Haley, Karl Josef Co, Daniel Jackson, and Thomas Hettrick. Kron will also perform in the workshop, set to play June 23–25.

The play The Homecoming Queen, from Powerhouse Founders Award recipient Ngozi Anyanwu, is also new to the season. The drama, about a bestselling novelist who returns to Nigeria to care for her father, will be presented as part of the Play Workshop series. The production replaces Hang Man.

As previously reported, the season will also include a musical adaptation of The Secret Life of Bees from Pulitzer Prize winner Nottage and Tony winner Sheik. Sam Gold will direct the presentation, set for July 27–29.
