The musical Mozart, about Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, will open at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria Oct. 2.
Mozart is written by Michael Kunze (book and lyrics) and Sylvester Levay (music), who were also responsible for the most successful German language musical ever, Elisabeth, which is opening in Karlstad, Sweden Sept. 30 and in Scheveningen, The Netherlands, Nov. 21.
The part of Wolfgang Mozart is played by Norwegian actor Yngve Gasoy Romdal (Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera in Norway, West Side Story in Sweden and Sunset Boulevard in Germany). Other leading roles will be played by Thomas Borchert as Leopold Mozart, Ruth Brauer as Constanze Mozart, Caroline Vasicek as Nannerl Mozart, Eva Maria Marold as Cäcilia Weber and German musical star Uwe Kroger as Hieronymus Colloredo.
Mozart will be staged by German opera-director Harry Kupfer, who also directed Elisabeth in Vienna. The choreography is by Dennis Callahan (Elisabeth, Roman Polanski's Tanz der Vampire), set designs by Hans Schavernoch (Freudiana, Elisabeth) and costume designs by Yan Tax (<>Anatevka, Cyrano, Joe and the Dutch version of the musical Elisabeth). The musical is produced by the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien, who have also produced Tanz der Vampire, which can still be seen at the Raimaund Theater until Jan. 15, 2000, before transferring to Stuttgart, Germany.
