La Mirada Theatre's production of William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee begins performances Feb. 5.

Directed by Jeff Maynard with choreography by DJ Gray and musical direction by David O, the production will officially open at the La Mirada venue Feb. 6. Performances will continue through Feb. 21. The cast is headed by Jason Graae, Melvin Abston, Shanon Mari Mills, Cassie Silva, Laura Griffith, Tom Zohar, Brett Ryback, Daniel Tatar and Lana McKissack. The production also features set design by Beowulf Boritt, lighting design by Craig Pierce, costume design by Jennifer Caprio, sound design by Josh Bessom and hair/wig/make-up design by Judi Lewin.

Spelling Bee is based on C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play created by Rebecca Feldman and the comedy troupe The Farm. Composer-lyricist William Finn provided the score for the musical with a book by librettist Rachel Sheinkin. The Broadway production played Circle in the Square Theatre April 15, 2005-Jan. 20, 2008.

Spelling Bee earned six Tony Award nominations, including Best Score, Best Book, Best Direction, Best Featured Actor (Dan Fogler) and Featured Actress (Celia Keenan Bolger) as well as a nomination for the top prize of Best Musical. Fogler and book writer Sheinkin took home awards for their work. The original Broadway cast recording is available on Ghostlight Records.
