A Scotch Bestiary, subtitled "Enigmatic Variations on a Zoological Carnival at a Caledonian Exhibition," is a two-movement portrait of the members of an imaginary menagerie. The animals are introduced in the first movement, "The Menagerie, Caged,"; a set of variations in the second half, "The Menagerie, Uncaged," sets them loose.
The program also includes Richard Strauss's Festival Prelude and his Also sprach Zarathustra, both of which make use of an organ. It is repeated on Friday, October 8 (without the Festival Prelude) and Saturday, October 9.
