News Lapine to Create iSondheim: aMusical Revue for Alliance Theatre Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist James Lapine will create a new revue based on the work of his longtime collaborator, Stephen Sondheim.

Entitled iSondheim: aMusical Revue, the revue will mark the grand finale of the 40th anniversary season for Atlanta's Alliance Theatre company. The production will run April 15-May 10, 2009, on the Alliance Stage.

Lapine is creating the innovative multimedia revue, which will incorporate original and archival commentary from the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. The new work promises to take audience members "to the very heart of Sondheim's life and work."

Michael Starobin, who earned Tony Awards for his orchestrations of Assassins and Sunday in the Park with George, has orchestrated the production.

"I truly look forward to returning to the Alliance Theatre where I had a great experience directing Spelling Bee. I enjoyed the Atlanta audiences and am thrilled that they will be the first to see this new production," Lapine said in a statement. "It will be full of surprises, exciting visual elements and, of course, filled with glorious Sondheim music."

Stephen Sondheim, who began his Broadway career as a lyricist for West Side Story and Gypsy, made his debut as a composer/lyricist in 1962 with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Along with collaborators including Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, James Goldman, George Furth, James Lapine, John Weidman and Harold Prince, Sondheim revolutionized the face of musical theatre with Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, Anyone Can Whistle, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, Into the Woods and Passion. His latest musical, Road Show, will make its New York debut at the Public Theater under the direction of John Doyle this fall. For further information phone (404) 733-5000 or visit AllianceTheatre.
