News Last Chance: Championship Season Ends at Second Stage May 2 Second Stage's revival of Jason Miller's That Championship Season, starring Dylan Baker and James Gammon, will end its run on May 2. The production was to have debuted March 26, but delays involving the opening of Second Stage's new space at 307 West 43rd St. caused the theater to postpone the first performance one week, to April 2. The opening was also pushed back, from April 14 to April 21. Apparently, official inspection of the new theater, at the northwest corner of 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue, took longer than anticipated and delayed the load-in of the play's set.

April 21 marked the grand opening not only of Second Stage Theater's revival, but of a new space for the company itself. The troupe formerly occupied the McGinn/Cazale Theater (above the Promenade on West 76th Street).

Season tells of the 20th reunion of a championship high school basketball team. Dylan Baker (La Bete, the film "Happiness") , Ray Baker, James Gammon (Buried Child), Michael O'Keefe and Dennis Boutsikaris star. Scott Ellis directs.

Originally produced at the Public Theater in 1972, Season transferred to Broadway later that year and played a total of 844 performances on and Off-Broadway. The original cast featured Walter McGinn, Charles Durning, Michael McGuire, Paul Sorvino and Richard A. Dysart.

Two other plays have been chosen for Second Stage's first season at their 296-seat Times Square theater: Albert Innaurato's farcical Gemini, directed by Mark Brokaw (starting May 18) and the New York premiere of Cheryl L. West's Jar The Floor, directed by Marion McClinton (starting July 27). The new space, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, occupies 17,000 square feet and includes a 27 x 55 foot stage.
