Apparently, recent high-profile cast additions such as Lea DeLaria and Julie Halston have not helped the fortunes of Paul Rudnick's Off-Broadway comedy, The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. The play, which transferred from the New York Theatre Workshop to the Minetta Lane Theatre earlier this year, will close May 2.

In the play, Rudnick ponders what it would be like had God started out by making Adam and Steve, rather than Adam and Eve. Adam and Steve (along with Jane and Mabel) take us on a journey from Mesopotamia to a K Mart on Christmas Eve as they struggle for faith and search for God.

After good notices at NYTW, the comedy reopened at the Minetta Lane on Feb. 1. On March 2, Julie Halston, a veteran of Charles Busch's campy farces, joined the cast. She assumed the various roles played by Lisa Kron. On the Town star Lea DeLaria, as well as Shannon Burkett, joined the cast March 16. DeLaria took over the role of Jane, originally played by Becky Ann Baker. Burkett, meanwhile, was the production's third Mabel, taking over for Katherine Meisle, who herself took over for injured Jenny Bacon during previews. Burkett was a member of the cast of the short-lived Off-Broadway play Stupid Kids. Finally, DeLaria's On the Town co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson became the new Adam on March 30. He replaced the departing Alan Tudyk.

Also in the cast are Jay Goede, Peg Healey, Joanna Adler, Peter Bartlett and Orlando Pabotoy. Rudnick's comedies include Jeffrey, The Naked Eye, Mr. Charles and I Hate Hamlet, as well as scripts for the films "In & Out" and "Addams Family Values."
