New York City Opera has recruited two pairs of performers to sing in the upcoming presentation of As One. As previously announced, the opera from composer Laura Kaminsky will run May 30 through June 8 at Kaufman Music Center as part of NYCO's Pride Series (joining the world premiere of Stonewall). Matt Gray directs.

The 2014 piece sees two singers playing Hannah, a trans woman who navigates her own gender identity throughout the course of the one-act opera. Baritones Michael Kelly and Jorell Williams will sing "Hannah Before," with mezzo-sopranos Blythe Gaissert and Briana Elyse Hunter as their respective "Hannah After"s.

Kaminsky collaborated with Mark Campbell and filmmaker Kimberly Reed, who both crafted the libretto, pulling inspiration from Reed's own journey and experiences as a trans woman. Reed also created video projections for the opera. The trio also wrote Some Light Emerges and the upcoming Today It Rains.
