Kennedy's new PS Classics disc will focus on Broadway's eclectic contemporary catalog, "capturing a soundtrack for our time written by the new voices shaping Broadway and popular song," according to PS Classics, the label devoted to (guess what?) Broadway music and popular songs.
The in-the-works disc is billed as a "thrilling pop-infused collection with arrangements tailored to Kennedy's dynamic and soulful delivery."
Songwriters represented will include Georgia Stitt (who has her own PS Classics recording, "This Ordinary Thursday"), David Kirshenbaum (Summer of '42, the upcoming Party Come Here and Vanities – The Musical), Jeff Blumenkrantz (Seven Deadly Sins, Urban Cowboy – The Musical), Matthew Sklar & Chad Begeulin (The Wedding Singer and the upcoming Get Shorty), as well as David Yazbeck, Andrew Lippa and Adam Guettel.
Kennedy continues her collaboration with Jason Robert Brown, who arranged several numbers for the album, and is also slated to contribute a song or two of his own.
The album is produced by Jeffrey Lesser, who collaborated with Kennedy on her first album, and whose many credits include the cast albums for Parade and The Last Five Years, as well as recordings for Barbra Streisand and the Grammy-winning soundtrack for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." Lauren Kennedy most recently appeared as The Lady of the Lake in the Tony Award-winning Monty Python's Spamalot. Kennedy also appeared as Nellie Forbush in Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theatre production of South Pacific, as well as the Broadway productions of Side Show and Sunset Boulevard. She originated the role of Kathleen in Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years at Northlight Theatre in Illinois.
