News Legally Blonde, Edward Scissorhands and Tour of Jersey Boys Will Debut in SF Season San Francisco audiences will be treated first to the new musical Legally Blonde, the London hit Edward Scissorhands and the Jersey Boys tour as part of the new Best of Broadway season.

The 2006-2007 Best of Broadway Theatre Series — presented at the company's San Francisco homes, the Orpheum, Curran and Golden Gate Theatres — will also feature Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin in the Edward Albee classic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Cherry Jones reprising her Tony Award-winning turn in John Patrick Shanley's Doubt as well as Broadway's The Light in the Piazza and Off Broadway' Altar Boyz.

The 36th season for Best of Broadway will be as follows (the final production in the eight-show series will be announced shortly):

 

 

   

  • The Light In The Piazza (Summer 2006)
    The romantic new musical by composer Adam Guettel and bookwriter Craig Lucas based on Elizabeth Spencer's novella about a woman on vacation in the Tuscan countryside with her daughter who falls in love with a handsome local. Bartlett Sher directs the multi-Tony Award winner.

  • Doubt (Fall 2006)
    Cherry Jones reprises her Tony Award-winning turn as a nun principal at a Catholic school in 1964 who has suspicions about a priest. The Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play by John Patrick Shanley ("Moonstruck") is staged again by Tony Award winning director Doug Hughes.

  • Edward Scissorhands (Fall 2006) - North American Premiere
    Director-choreographer Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake, The Car Man) offers his new take on the Tim Burton fairy tale movie about a boy who is left unfinished by his creator. Music and arrangements are by Terry Davies based on Danny Elfman's original themes.

  • Jersey Boys (Fall 2006) - Tour Premiere
    From blue-collar beginnings to gold-record status, the story of American pop group The Four Seasons currently comes to life. Des McAnuff (The Who's Tommy) directs the musical by Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice, Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe

  • Legally Blonde (Winter 2007) - World Premiere Musical
    Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, La Cage aux Folles) makes his debut as director choreographer with this musical take on the Amanda Brown novel and 2001 MGM film about a sorority girl who tries her hand at law school. Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keefe provide the score to Heather Hach's book.

  • Edward Albee's Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Spring 2007)
    Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin reprise their Tony Award-nominated turn as the forever feuding George and Martha who are joined by another couple for some late night cocktails. Anthony Page directs his new staging of the work.

  • Altar Boyz (Spring 2007)
    Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker provide the score with book by Kevin Del Aguila to this behind-the-music tale of the ups and down of a God-worshipping boy band (with one Jewish member).
