News Lies Have Been Told to Transfer to London's Trafalgar Studios The biographical one-man-show Lies Have Been Told — about the rise and demise of notorious publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell — will transfer to the Trafalgar Studios’ Studio 2 for a strictly limited run from Jan 10-28, 2006, with an official opening Jan 11.

Written by television writer Rod Beacham, the play features Philip York as the Czech-born magnate who used hundreds of millions of pounds worth of pension funds to bolster his ailing empire.

Performed as a monologue directed at the audience, the play charts Maxwell’s rise from poverty to the boardroom and addresses the various conspiracy theories that surround the disappearance from his yacht on Nov. 5, 1991. His body was subsequently found floating in the Atlantic off the Canary Islands.

In the show York’s Maxwell addresses the various theories surrounding the death — that Maxwell committed suicide or was killed by a secret agent or the Russian mafia. The play also examines the official verdict of accidental drowning.

The show, whose title contains the tag line An Evening With Robert Maxwell, is directed by Alan Dosser and has just completed a six-week run at North London’s New End Theatre.

Lies Have Been Told is co-produced by Andy Jordan and Dale Djerassi, son of scientist-turned-playwright Carl Djerassi who invented the contraceptive pill. For more information call (0)870 060 6632.
