Written by television writer Rod Beacham, the play features Philip York as the Czech-born magnate who used hundreds of millions of pounds worth of pension funds to bolster his ailing empire.

Performed as a monologue directed at the audience, the play charts Maxwell’s rise from poverty to the boardroom and addresses the various conspiracy theories that surround the disappearance from his yacht on Nov. 5, 1991. His body was subsequently found floating in the Atlantic off the Canary Islands.

In the show York’s Maxwell addresses the various theories surrounding the death — that Maxwell committed suicide or was killed by a secret agent or the Russian mafia. The play also examines the official verdict of accidental drowning.

The show, whose title contains the tag line An Evening With Robert Maxwell, is directed by Alan Dosser and has just completed a six-week run at North London’s New End Theatre.
