News Lights Up on Lin-Manuel Miranda, Returning to Broadway's In the Heights Lin-Manuel Miranda, the charismatic actor-writer who starred in, created and wrote the songs for Broadway's In the Heights, steps back into the lead role at 8 PM Dec. 25 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Miranda won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Score, and was nominated as Best Actor in a Musical for his kinetic turn as Usnavi, a Dominican bodega owner who guides us through a couple of days in the life of friends, family and lovers in the Latino-populated Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights.

In the Heights won the 2008 Tony for Best Musical. Miranda will play the final two weeks of the run. As previously announced, In the Heights will play its final performance Jan. 9, 2011, at 7 PM. When it closes, the production will have played 29 previews and 1,185 regular performances.

Conceived by Miranda, with a libretto by Quiara Alegria Hudes, In the Heights is directed by Thomas Kail (Lombardi), with choreography by Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler.

A Universal film version of the musical is in development, to feature Miranda in the role that he created.

After a six-month, award-winning Off-Broadway run in 2007, In the Heights began previews on Broadway Feb. 14, 2008. The musical opened on Broadway March 9, 2008, and recouped its $10 million investment in ten months. The musical is also the winner of 2008 Tonys for Best Orchestrations (Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman).

The cast currently features Arielle Jacobs, Andréa Burns, Marcy Harriell, Priscilla Lopez, Olga Merediz, Rick Négron, Courtney Reed, Jon Rua and Seth Stewart with Sharona D’Ornellas, Rosie Lani Fiedelman, Rubén Flores, Marcus Paul James, Jennifer Locke, Doreen Montalvo, Noah Rivera, Eliseo Román, Gabrielle Ruiz, Marcos Santana, Rickey Tripp, Willis White, Michael Balderrama, Blanca Camacho, Allison Thomas Lee, Alejandra Reyes, Alicia Taylor Tomasko and Daniel J. Watts.

In the Heights is produced by Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller, Jill Furman Willis, Sander Jacobs, Robyn Goodman/Walt Grossman, Peter Fine and Sonny Everett/Mike Skipper with associate producers Ruth Hendel and Harold Newman.

The playing schedule for In the Heights is as follows: Tuesdays and Sundays at 7 PM, Monday, Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8 PM, with matinees Saturdays and Sundays at 2 PM. There will be added performances Dec. 29 at 2 PM and 8 PM. There will be no performances Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 at 7 PM.
