Architect Hugh Hardy is designing the $41 million, two-story addition that will crown the Beaumont with a glass ensconced 131-seat theatre, as well as rehearsal and office space, and an outdoor terrace.

The venue will be named the Claire Tow Theater, in honor of the wife of LCT board member Leonard Tow. Construction will begin this spring with completion expected in late 2011 to early 2012.

LCT is currently offering South Pacific in the Beaumont. Representatives for Lincoln Center Theater said that the construction will not affect theatrical programming at the Beaumont, or in the subterranean Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, LCT's Off-Broadway space.

Lincoln Center Theater has already raised 90 percent of the funding needed for the addition through leadership support from its board of directors and Lincoln Center. The remaining funds (in addition to operating funding for LCT3) will be raised during the public phase of LCT's capital campaign.

Architect Hugh Hardy originally served as an assistant to designer Jo Mielziner, who along with Eero Saarinen, designed LCT's current home and theatres in the 1960s. LCT3, which was launched by Lincoln Center Theater in 2008, was created to develop strong relationships with new artists and to develop new audiences. The program directly addresses the frustrations that playwrights have with the current system of readings and workshops, providing emerging artists with fully staged productions of their work and enticing theatregoers with $20 tickets. Paige Evans is the director of LCT3.

LCT3 is currently in residence at the Duke on 42nd Street. The 2010 programming includes Ellen Fairey's Graceland (May 3-29) and On the Levee, featuring a score by Todd Almond and a book by Marcus Gardley (June 14-July 10).
