News Lionsgate to Release "Ironweed" DVD, with Streep, Nicholson and Lane, in 2009 Lionsgate will release the 1987 film "Ironweed," which is based on William Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, on DVD in the New Year.

The Feb. 24, 2009, release marks the first time the film, which co-stars Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, will be available on DVD.

In addition to Streep and Nicholson, who were Oscar-nominated for their performances, the cast also boasts Tony Award winner Nathan Lane as well as Carroll Baker, Michael O'Keefe, Fred Gwynne, Diane Venora and Tom Waits.

"Francis Phelan (Nicholson), a drunken former baseball player is running away from life and the painful, guilty memories that haunt him," according to "Ironweed" press notes. "Helen Archer (Streep), is Francis' longtime girlfriend and partner in drink. Together they lament the misery of life and ponder their tragic pasts, hoping to find a way to free themselves from their troubled lives. Told in a series of drunken flashbacks, 'Ironweed' is a dark portrait of Depression-era hopelessness and a searing character-driven drama."

Penned by William Kennedy and directed by Hector Babenco, "Ironweed" is rated R and runs 143 minutes.

The DVD will have a suggested retail price of $14.98.
