Christmas was always a favorite time for the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott's famed novel, "Little Women." Marriott Theatre in the Chicago area is telling their tale in time for the holidays.

Little Women, the 2004-05 Broadway musical that's becoming a regional favorite, gets a major Chicago-area production Dec. 5-Feb. 3, 2008, at Marriott in Lincolnshire, IL.

Chicago mainstay Paula Scrofano is Marmee, watching over her brood of daughters — including Chicago Wicked alumna Heidi Kettenring as Jo March — in Civil War-era Massachusetts. The in-the-round staging is directed by Joe Leonardo, with musical direction by Doug Peck.

Opening for the musical by composer Jason Howland, lyricist Mindi Dickstein and librettist Allan Knee will be Dec. 12. The show's score was preserved on a Broadway cast album. "Astonishing" is a standout power ballad for aspiring writer Jo March.

The Marriott creative team includes set designer Tom Ryan, costume designer Nancy Missimi, lighting designer Diane Williams, sound designer Cecil Averrett and properties designer Greg Isaac. Orchestral reductions are by David Siegel. Patti Garwood conducts the Marriott Theatre Orchestra. According to Marriott, "Based on the enormously popular 1869 novel by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women follows the March sisters as they come-of-age in 19th century New England. While their father is serving as an army chaplain during the Civil War, their beloved mother, Marmee, is left to raise the four girls. As each sister tries to find their place in the world, they inevitably take paths that lead them all in different directions; yet they never lose their sisterly bond that helps define who they are at heart."

The cast also includes Dara Cameron, Jon Cunningham, Kaitlin Fine, Rebecca Finnegan, Michael Gerhart, Megan Long, Abby Mueller, John Reeger, Stephen Schellhardt, Emily Long, Morgan Weed, Ann Whitney and Jarrod Zimmerman.
