Lloyd Webber accompanied the singer on piano. The competition was won by the Norwegian entry, "Fairytale," written and performed by Norway's X-Factor winner Alexander Rybak. Ewen had been chosen to perform the song by public vote in a live finale on the BBC1 TV program "Your Country Needs You!," held on Jan. 31.

After the competition, Lloyd Webber commented, "Jade performed brilliantly, as I knew she would. I am delighted with her fifth place finish. After so many years of disappointing results the U.K. can finally hold its head up high. I am sure that this will be a springboard for Jade and that she will go on to enjoy great success as an artist."

In the competition itself, the citizens of each of the participating 42 countries (who are shortlisted to 25 entries for the night itself) vote by telephone or text message for their favorite songs. The ten favorites are awarded 12, 10, then 8 through 1 points each by each country, and after all the points are collected, the country with the highest number of points wins the competition. The winning Norwegian entry this year scored an all-time record of 387 points; Britain's entry scored 173 points. In between the two, the Icelandic entry – Yohanna singing "Is It True" – came in second with 218 points; Azerbaijan's entry, AySel and Arash singing "Always," came in third with 207 points; and Turkey's entry, Hadise singing "Düm Tek Tek," came in fourth with 177 points.
