A spokesperson for Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed a published report that the composer has dropped the idea of a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, a work-in-progress that had produced at least one song, "The Heart Is Slow to Learn."

The song was unveiled to the public at the televised London concert celebrating Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday. Kiri Te Kanawa sang the number, which, presumably communicates the Phantom's enduring love for his lost Christine.

Instead of attempting to make lightning strike twice, Lloyd Webber is collaborating with British playwright Ben Elton on The Beautiful Game, a serious soccer-oriented musical set in politically-troubled Northern Ireland.

A workshop is planned for early 2000, a spokesperson told Playbill On Line.
