To stave off its demise, the orchestra launched a month-long fundraising campaign called "Save Our Symphony," appealing to supporters, community leaders, local governments and provincial and federal arts bodies.

Some of those local governments have offered to help, pledging a total of C$505,000, reports The Record. The Region of Waterloo has pledged C$250,000; the city of Kitchener has pledged C$170,000 and Waterloo will give C$85,000.

The one-time grants still must get official approval from the councils of Kitchener, Waterloo and Waterloo Region, according to the paper. The three councils will meet later this week and are expected to vote in favor of the funding.

The KWSO's 18 board members have already pledged financial support for a total of C$230,000, which is close to 10 percent of the overall community goal, according to the statement posted earlier this month.
