Hampstead Theatre was the first to live-stream free to national and international audiences with its production #Aiww: The Arrest Of Ai Weiwei in 2013.  Live-streaming is now a consistent way of audiences seeing performances as they happen. According to press materials, the theatre is keen that its plays are seen not only by U.K. audiences but also by the communities who inspire them and form the context for the plays. Thus  #Aiww: The Arrest Of Ai Weiwei could be seen in China, Drawing The Line in India and Wonderland will now be seen in the areas of the U.K. most affected by the miner's strike of 1984, which is the subject of Beth Steel's new play.

In a press statement, Edward Hall (who directed Wonderland and is the theatre's artistic director) commented, "At Hampstead, we believe in accessible theatre –  Access for All. As such, we’re thrilled to present our third live and free streamed production to the world. Our aim is to live free stream as many of our productions as possible so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy free quality theatre. Our previous free streamed productions have been watched from the home, in classrooms, in hospitals and by those ‘on-the-go’. Free live-streaming allows us to break new ground and reach an audience who can’t access Hampstead Theatre in person. We hope people all over the country, and, indeed, all over the world watch Wonderland and engage with this extraordinary piece of British history which coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the Miners’ Strike.
