Kenneth Lonergan's once-untitled new play will be called Lobby Hero, and, as previously announced, Playwrights Horizons will stage the world premiere in March 2001.
The play is set in the lobby of an urban apartment complex, in the aftermath of a brutal murder. There, four disparate souls -- two young cops, a restless security guard and his tightly-wound supervisor -- confront the truth about themselves, their relationships and their city.
Mark Brokaw directs the new work by the author of the rueful, matter-of fact The Waverly Gallery and This is Our Youth (to say nothing of the films, "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle" and "You Can Count on Me"). Lonergan has been lauded for his spare, unsentimental storytelling.
Previews for Lobby Hero begin Feb. 16, 2001, with an opening set for March 11. Performances continue to March 25.
Lobby Hero will be the third of four mainstage works at Playwrights Horizons' Anne G. Wilder Theatre on 42nd Street in New York City. *
The world premiere of Theresa Rebeck's The Butterfly Collection, featuring Marian Seldes and Brian Murray, will open the Playwrights season beginning Sept. 8.
The 141-seat Off-Broadway nonprofit, committed to shepherding playwrights and new works, will also offer two plays in its smaller studio space on 42nd Street. Christopher Shinn's Other People plays the Studio Oct. 12-Nov. 5. A second play will be announced.
