The evening's featured soloists will be cellist Han-Na Chang and flutist James Galway, with actors Jeremy Irons and Dietlinde Turban (who is also Maazel's wife) as narrators. The evening will be directed by Dianne Berkun.
The concert will be followed by a black-tie dinner on the grand promenade of Avery Fisher Hall.
Maazel became the Philharmonic's music director in 2002, 60 years after he made his debut with the orchestra at its summer venue, Lewisohn Stadium. He has also served as music director of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Currently, he is also music director of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma, Italy. His first opera, 1984, premieres at the Royal Opera in May.
